Art of the Improviser, a dual set of live recordings, celebrates Shipp's talents in two traditional settings. The first is a recording of Shipp with his trio (bassist Michael Bisio and longtime cohort Whit Dickey on drums), captured at The Arts Center of the Capital Region, in Troy New York. The second disc has Shipp performing solo at (Le) Poisson Rouge in New York city. Both shows took place in the spring of 2010.
Shipp's art of the improviser continues to shake the jazz world
Westword ''shipp has one of the most unique playing styles in music.'' Denver post ''he has formed a style that would appear to owe very little to those that
came before him-that's a problem when writing about his music but it won't
detract from the enjoyment of his approach if the listener puts history
aside.'' Kuvo--jazz notes ''will allow you to play alice exploring a wonderland of sound--simply put
shipp exemplifies the art of the improviser'' Downbeat-4 1/2 stars
''the pieces develop with stunning ingenuity in order to seamlessly segue
into the next--consequently,one witnesses the unfolding of a monumental work
that befits a musician who deserves a place of choice in the jazz piano
pantheon.'' Boston globe
''a galvanizing force--he has done more than just about any other figure of
his generation to uphold and advance a jazz aesthetic built upon free
improvisation'' read more Popmatters
''matthew shipp is a freak force of nature when he sits at the
piano--shipp's improvisation skills can seriously give keith jarrett a run
for his money'' wire
''shipp's demonstrating effectively that melody and harmony are part of
the selfsame continuum--shipp takes evident delight in confounding
expectations by transforming fly me to the moon into a lean two-part
invention worthy of bach''

Pianist Myra Melford and clarinetist Ben Goldberg present a duet concert of new compositions. Melodic, exploratory, lyrical, swinging, virtuosic – this is chamber music for the twenty first century where composition meets improvisation to surprise and enlighten. Myra Melford, "the most gifted pianist/composer to emerge from jazz since Anthony Davis," (SF Chronicle) and Ben Goldberg, whom John Zorn has called "one of the greatest clarinetists I have ever heard," play together in Myra's group Be Bread and in the collective quartet Afterlife Music Radio. They have been performing as a duo since 2008 |

| Ronald Shannon Jackson as a teenager took part in regular sessions of accompanying musicians from Ray Charles. He studied history and sociology in Texas, Missouri and Connecticut . Mid 60s he came under a music scholarship to New York City, where he was involved in Albert Ayler's legendary free-jazz recordings.
Jackson is notable for his unusual approach to his instrument, which draws as much inspiration from military and parade bands as from traditional jazz drumming. He is the only person to have recorded and performed with the three prime shapers of free jazz : pianist Cecil Taylor and saxophonists
Ornette Coleman and Albert Ayler. |

| Project of Polish saxophonist and clarinetist Mikołaj Trzaska.Together with Chicago drummer Tim Daisy and New York trombonist Steve Swell, Mikolaj Trzaska played concerts in Germany, Poland and USA and the other Swedish musician tuba player Per-Ake Holmlander. All the musicians are members of Resonance, project of american saxophone player and composer Ken Vandermark. The music of this peculiar quartet is nothing else but the continuation of old tradition of improvised jazz broadened with a fresh view of contemporary musicians from different countries of the world. The quartet combines various traditions: jazz, sonority and contemporary music. When these traditions meet a new intimate music world is generated. The main idea of the group is a new form of acoustic instruments dialogue. During improvisation the musicians use different types of musical narration, from the role of accompanists who build complicated compositional structures out of individual phrases to the role of soloists. Thanks to the search for sound combinations the borders between instruments disappear. It often seems as if the group processed the music digitally but in reality the musicians use only acoustic sounds. The expression of the trio is also surprising. The dynamics vary between very delicate details to very strong, almost rock accents. All musicians of the trio have something in common – each of them created his own language of expression used in improvisation. And although the instrumental lineup is totally acoustic the music of the quartet sounds very modern, musicians use unique techniques of playing. | ![]() |
