Matthew Shipp Trio USA
Whit Dickey - drums, Matthew Shipp - piano, Michael Bisio - bass

With his unique and recognizable style, pianist Matthew Shipp worked and recorded vigorously during the 1990s, creating music in which free jazz and modern classical intertwine. He first became known in the early '90s as the pianist in the David S. Ware Quartet, and soon began leading his own dates -- most often including Ware bandmate and leading bassist William Parker -- and recording a number of duets with a variety of musicians, from the legendary Roscoe Mitchell to violinist Mat Maneri, who began appearing on recordings in the 1990s. Through his range of live and recorded performances and unswerving individual development, Shipp came to be regarded as a prolific and respected voice in creative music by the decade's close read more: live at Saalfelden Festival 2011 Lisbon aug. 2012

the Financial Times writes "On Saturday, november 10th 2012 Matthew Shipp’s trio played at The Vortex. Shipp opened unaccompanied, head stooped over his keyboard, rippling quietly up scales of his own invention. Soon there were snippets and clusters and spiralling lines. Bass strolled in, shifted gear, a swish of brushes firmed the pulse and Shipp was up and running. Shipp juxtaposes brittle, spider-and-spike runs with sustained vamps that change key, alter shape and explode into dense, closely-textured chords. There were snappy riffs and tub-thumping themes – one such, an almost straight “Johnny Comes Marching Home” – dancey beats, rhapsodies and hints of tradition. The interplay was uncanny with bassist Michael Bisio fine-tuned to every move, and delivering the first-set highlight, a resonant and thumping solo that ended as a bowed bass elegy themed on Coltrane’s “Naima”."

Matthew Shipp caught ears when he was playing with saxophonist David S. Ware and bassist William Parker, but it soon became clear that this pianist was wholly his own man. He formed a great trio, he became the curator of a recording series, he experimented with electronics, he dove back into jazz standards and he developed into a wholly original player in the solo piano history of jazz. He is one of the few jazz musicians of the new millennium to generate ink suggesting that jazz was developing an appeal among rock fans.

Samuel Blaser Trio  CH/F/DK.........
feat.  Marc Ducret (git) and Peter Bruun (dr)

Samuel Blaser was first attracted to the trombone after being enthralled by a marching band performing near his hometown of La Chaux de Fonds in Switzerland when he was just two years old. His genuine enthusiasm for the trombone is palpable to this day and can be felt even as Blaser performs some of the most sophisticated and elegant music since the instrument's heyday during Albert Mangelsdorff's reign.

Blaser's new European based project, featuring the incredible French guitarist Marc Ducret and the versatile Danish drummer Peter Bruun, confirms that he is an artist who overflows with daring ideas and concepts. Taking the adventurous step of melding written material with improvisation, Blaser creates a new musical world with inventive instrumentation and unsurpassed skill which is at once familiar and yet startlingly fresh and compelling.
Launched at the JazzDor Festival, the Samuel Blaser Trio will officially give their first performance on June 5th 2013 in Berlin. the review of AAJ .. live in London live in Zürich.presskit . Jazzpodium 4/13 Deutsch..

Shofar PL
Mikolaj Trzaska,sax,cl.,Raphael Roginski,guit., Macio Moretti,drums
The trio's repertoire includes nigunim, or religious songs meant to induce a state of religious ecstasy, freylakhs of a more dancelike nature, as well as pieces derived from Jewish liturgy. Unchanged in form, this material unlocks the whole broad spectrum of Hasidic music and culture. As composers and performers, Raphael Roginski has focussed on jazz-influenced improvisation and folk music; Mikolaj Trzaska explores new wave, free jazz, modern rock and poetry; and Macio Moretti covers grind/punk, twisted country and western, improv, psychedelic and pseudojazz.
SHOFAR is a trio consisting of three pillars of Polish improvised music: Mikolaj Trzaska – an outstanding saxophonist and clarinetist, Raphael Roginski – guitarist and composer, and Macio Moretti – drummer known from Mitch&Mitch activity. Shofar was founded in May 2006 on the initiative of Raphael Roginski. The ideological aim of the group is to find a common denominator for traditional Chasidic music and free jazz as well as to continue the tradition of Jewish music which is still alive for the group. The repertoire of the group consists of traditional, religious, Jewish music. The compositions are most often ‘nigunim’ that is magical religious songs and ‘freylaks’ – more rhythmical pieces and compositions deriving from Jewish liturgy. Through music various religious currents are reproduced in the way it happens when Torah is commented. That is why next to Chasidic nigunim we can find music of the oldest rite in synagogue and next to songs of interwar cantors, music of liberal rite. The album ‘Shofar’ published by Gdansk publishing house Kilogram Records in September 2007 consists mainly of compositions from Chasidic tradition. The main impulse to take up this tradition was the finding of Mojsiej Bieregowski’s collection of Chasidic songs by Raphael Roginski. This musicologist living 1892 – 1961 studied Jewish music from Ukraine, Poland and Moldavia since the 20-ties.

A very special concert performance, an interpretation of Brahms' violin concerto Opus 77 in D Major. A work in progress, the music features elements drawn directly from the composer's score, expanded through improvisation and conduction. The performance transcends genres while maintaining the integrity/intent of the original work.
